Seven Myths About Shelter Dogs

Don't let misconceptions keep you from finding your perfect companion. We're busting the most common myths about adopting from a shelter.

This couldn't be further from the truth! We have dogs of all ages — from puppies to seniors. And the old saying "you can't teach an old dog new tricks" is simply a myth. Dogs are remarkably adaptable learners at any age. Many adult dogs already know basic commands and are calmer and easier to train than puppies.

Every dog at SAVE receives a full veterinary examination, vaccinations, heartworm testing, flea and tick prevention, and spay/neuter before adoption. Our veterinary team ensures each dog is healthy and ready to thrive in their new home. You receive a full health history at adoption.

All SAVE dogs undergo a thorough behavior assessment. We also offer our Post Adoption Training Scholarship (PATS) to help qualified adopters work through any initial adjustment challenges with a certified trainer. The vast majority of dogs in our care are well-behaved, loving animals simply looking for a stable home.

Dogs are incredibly resilient and loving animals. When placed in a caring, stable home, shelter dogs bond deeply — and often quickly — with their new families. Many adopters report that their shelter dog seems to know they were rescued and shows extraordinary loyalty and affection.

While our available dogs vary, we frequently have purebred dogs and puppies available for adoption. We also work with breed-specific rescue groups. If you're looking for a specific breed or mix, ask our staff — we may be able to help connect you with the right dog, whether currently in our care or incoming.

Many of our dogs were family pets before coming to us and are fully house-trained. Even those that need a refresher course adapt quickly in a home environment with a consistent routine. Our staff can guide you on the best approach for your new dog's specific background.

The vast majority of dogs arrive at SAVE through no fault of their own. Common reasons include owner illness, housing changes, financial hardship, divorce, new baby, or relocation. These are wonderful, loving animals caught in difficult human circumstances — not dogs with something "wrong" with them.
